ISO 45001 for a safe and healthy workplace

What is ISO 45001 certification?

ISO 45001 is an international standard for occupational health and safety. It sets out the requirements for an occupational health and safety management system and provides guidance on its use, enabling organisations to provide safe and healthy workplaces by preventing work-related injury and ill health and by proactively improving their performance.

Why ISO 45001 certification matters

ISO 45001 occupational health and safety certification is very important for every organisation, whatever its field.

Certification brings an organisation many benefits, including

Benefits for the organisation

  • A better image: certification reflects the organisation’s commitment to providing a safe and healthy working environment, enhancing its image and reputation with customers, investors and employees.
  • Greater efficiency: the system helps identify and assess risks and take the action needed to reduce them, cutting accidents and injuries and so increasing productivity and efficiency.
  • Legal compliance: the system ensures compliance with national and international occupational health and safety legislation and regulations.
  • Lower costs: by reducing accidents and injuries, it cuts the costs of medical treatment, workers’ compensation and production downtime.
  • Better working relationships: the system helps create a positive working environment, strengthening team spirit and employee loyalty.
  • Competitive advantage: certification gives the organisation a competitive edge, as many companies and organisations prefer to deal with certified companies.

Benefits for employees

  • Greater awareness: the system raises employees’ awareness of the importance of occupational health and safety, encouraging them to take the precautions needed to protect themselves and their colleagues.
  • Better morale: the system improves employee morale, as staff feel that management cares about their safety and health.
  • Fewer occupational injuries and illnesses: the system protects employees from occupational injuries and illnesses, improving their health and quality of life.

History of ISO 45001

The origins and development of ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety management

Recent years have seen notable developments in occupational health and safety management, culminating in the publication of the international standard ISO 45001 in 2018. However, the roots of the standard go back further.

  • The first foundation: the International Labour Organization standard (ILO-OSH 2001). In 2001, the International Labour Organization set out an international standard for occupational health and safety management systems (ILO-OSH 2001). This standard laid the foundations for developing ISO 45001, providing a comprehensive reference framework for good practice in this field.
  • Developing the international standard ISO 45001: building on the ILO standard, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) began developing a more detailed and comprehensive standard. Development work continued for several years until ISO 45001 was finalised and officially published in March 2018.
