ISO 9001

What is ISO 9001 certification?

ISO 9001 is an international standard that sets out the requirements for a quality management system (QMS). ISO 9001 certification is awarded to organisations and companies that demonstrate their ability to consistently deliver products and services that meet customer requirements and applicable law. It acts as a seal of quality, assuring customers that they are dealing with an organisation committed to providing the best possible service.

Why does your organisation need ISO 9001 certification?

    • Better product and service quality: A quality management system helps identify and reduce errors, improving the quality of the products and services you deliver.

    • Greater customer satisfaction: By focusing on meeting customer needs and exceeding their expectations, certification helps build strong relationships with customers and increase their loyalty.

    • Greater credibility: Certification is evidence of the organisation’s commitment to quality, strengthening the trust of customers, suppliers and business partners.

    • A competitive edge: In a competitive market, ISO 9001 certification is a major advantage, as many companies prefer to deal with organisations certified to this standard.

    • Better efficiency: A quality management system helps streamline processes and reduce waste, improving efficiency and increasing productivity.

What are the benefits of ISO 9001 certification?

Benefits of ISO certification

    • Access to new markets: Many large companies require their suppliers to hold ISO 9001 certification, opening new doors to business partnerships.

    • A better corporate image: Certification projects a positive image of the organisation, attracting investment and talent.

    • Lower costs: By improving processes and reducing errors, the organisation can achieve long-term cost savings.

    • Benefiting from international expertise: ISO 9001 is based on international best practice in quality management, allowing the organisation to benefit from this expertise.

Which organisations can obtain ISO 9001 certification?

In general, any organisation, regardless of its size or the nature of its work, can obtain ISO 9001 certification. Whether it is a large manufacturer, a small service business or even a non-profit organisation, applying the standard brings many benefits.

Examples of organisations that have obtained ISO 9001 certification

    • Industrial companies: Manufacturers of cars, electronics, food, pharmaceuticals and more.

    • Service companies: Telecommunications companies, banks, insurers, hospitals, hotels and transport companies.

    • Non-profit organisations: Schools, universities, hospitals and charities.

    • Government bodies: Ministries, government agencies and municipalities.

    • Many major companies.

History of ISO 9001

The ISO 9001 standard: how did it begin, and how has it evolved into what it is today?

Origins and early development

    • The 1970s and 1980s: The idea of harmonising quality standards began to emerge in many industrialised countries. Almost every country had its own quality management standards, which created difficulties for international trade.

    • The International Organization for Standardization (ISO): To overcome this problem, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) developed the ISO 9000 family of standards, which included ISO 9001 as one of its parts.

    • 1987: The first edition of ISO 9001 was published, focusing mainly on documentation and procedures.

Recent developments

    • 1994: The first comprehensive revision of the standard was carried out, simplifying and harmonising it.

    • 2000: A new edition of the standard was published, with a stronger focus on the process approach and the importance of customer satisfaction.

    • 2015: The current edition of the standard (ISO 9001:2015) was published. It is based on a new high-level structure that makes it easier to integrate with other management system standards, such as ISO 14001 (environmental management), and places greater emphasis on leadership, risk management and risk-based thinking.

ISO 9001 is not just a certificate; it is an ongoing journey towards excellence. As global competition grows and customer needs evolve, complying with ISO 9001 helps organisations stay ahead and achieve sustainable growth. The future demands that organisations be more agile and responsive to change, and ISO 9001 provides the framework to make that happen.
