ISO 20400 sustainable procurement

In today’s world, corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become an important part of business practice, and many companies adopt international standards that demonstrate their commitment to ethical and sustainable practices. ISO 20400 is one of the most important international guidance standards on sustainable procurement and on building social responsibility into supply chains.

What Is ISO 20400?

ISO 20400 is a set of international guidelines issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to help companies build social responsibility principles into every stage of their supply chain, from selecting suppliers to distributing finished products. It is guidance on sustainable procurement, not a requirements standard, so it is not intended for certification.

What Are the Benefits of Applying ISO 20400?

Applying the ISO 20400 guidance offers companies many benefits, including:

  • A better image and reputation: applying the standard demonstrates the company’s commitment to ethical and sustainable practices, strengthening the trust of customers, investors and government bodies.
  • Greater competitiveness: applying the standard helps companies stand out from competitors and attract more customers who care about buying from socially responsible businesses.
  • A more efficient supply chain: the standard helps companies identify and manage social and environmental risks in their supply chain, improving efficiency and reducing costs.
  • More innovation: the standard encourages companies to think creatively about how to embed social responsibility in their operations, which can lead to new products and services.
  • Motivated employees: applying the standard shows the company’s commitment to a safe and fair working environment, helping to motivate staff and improve productivity.

How Does an Organisation Apply ISO 20400?

To apply the ISO 20400 guidance, companies can follow specific steps, including:

  • Assess the current situation: the company should evaluate its current social practices across the supply chain to identify areas for improvement.
  • Set a social responsibility policy: the company should adopt a clear policy setting out its social commitments in the supply chain.
  • Implement the social responsibility policy: the company should put its policy into practice through specific programmes and initiatives.
  • Review and audit: the company should regularly review its own social practices and those of its suppliers to make sure they are in line with the ISO 20400 guidance.

Is There an ISO 20400 Certificate?

No. ISO 20400 is not a requirements standard, as it does not set requirements against which conformity could be certified, so no certificates are issued against it.

Instead, it provides guidance to help organisations build social responsibility principles into their supply chain; the steps for applying it are set out above.

A Brief History of ISO 20400

The ISO 20400 standard was developed in response to the growing need for international standards to assess and manage social practices in global supply chains.

Here is the timeline:

  • 2013: project committee ISO/PC 277, “Sustainable procurement”, was formed.
  • 2017: ISO 20400:2017 was published.

Who can apply ISO 20400?

Any organisation that wants to build social responsibility principles into its supply chain can apply ISO 20400.

Organisations that can apply it include:

  • Companies: of all sizes and sectors, including SMEs and multinationals.
  • Non-profit organisations: such as charities and NGOs.
  • Government agencies: at every level.
  • Educational institutions: such as universities and colleges.

There are no specific requirements regarding an organisation’s size, structure or sector to apply ISO 20400.
