ISO 45001 is an international standard for occupational health and safety management systems. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization, it gives organisations a framework for improving employee health and safety and reducing workplace accidents and occupational risks.
What are the benefits of ISO 45001 certification?
ISO 45001 demonstrates how much a certified organisation cares about the health and safety of its workforce, through a range of processes and areas. Here is what ISO 45001 influences:
Better employee health and safety: ISO 45001 certification helps improve employee health and safety in the workplace.
By analysing risks and implementing appropriate safety measures, the organisation can reduce workplace accidents, injuries and occupational illnesses.
Compliance with legislation and legal requirements: ISO 45001 certification helps organisations comply with legislation and legal requirements on occupational health and safety in the workplace.
It provides a unified framework for implementing best practice and meeting internationally recognised standards.
A better organisational reputation: ISO 45001 certification reflects the organisation’s commitment to employee health and safety and to a safe workplace. It can help improve the organisation’s reputation and build the trust of customers, partners and the community.
Greater efficiency and productivity: implementing an effective occupational health and safety management system can help increase efficiency and productivity in the workplace.
By identifying and reducing risks and improving working procedures, the organisation can boost overall performance and reduce time lost to injury and illness.
More business and contract opportunities: in some industries and sectors, ISO 45001 certification is a prerequisite for qualifying for tenders or contracts.
History of the ISO 45001 standard
The ISO 45001 standard for occupational health and safety management systems (Occupational Health and Safety Management System – OHSMS) was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and first published in March 2018.
However, the standard’s development goes back further: in 2001, the International Labour Organization (ILO) published an international standard for occupational health and safety management systems entitled ILO-OSH 2001, and these guidelines formed a basis for developing ISO 45001.
Who can obtain ISO 45001 certification?
Any organisation or company can obtain ISO 45001 certification if it wants to improve its employee health and safety performance and apply internationally recognised standards in this area.
There are no restrictions on the industry or sector the organisation belongs to.
Small, medium-sized and large organisations, whether in the public or private sector, can obtain certification.
Achieving ISO 45001 certification requires implementing a comprehensive and effective occupational health and safety management system and ensuring compliance with the standard’s requirements in areas such as risk analysis, safety planning, training and awareness, incident response, review and continual improvement.
