The role of the Military Engineers in the October War – ISO
The Military Engineers Department played a major role in the October War.
The Military Engineers Department is one of the departments of the Engineering Authority of the Egyptian Armed Forces. It played an effective role in the October War, when it had to accomplish several key tasks.
These tasks included opening 70 breaches in the sand barrier of the Bar-Lev Line on the far bank, each of 1,500 cubic metres. The department also had to build 10 heavy bridges to carry tanks, artillery and heavy equipment across. In addition, it was tasked with building 5 light bridges to draw enemy fire and so ease the enemy’s attack on the main bridges.
Another task was to build 10 assault bridges for the infantry to cross. The department also had to prepare and operate 35 ferries across the Canal. Finally, it was tasked with operating 720 rubber boats for the infantry crossing.
All these tasks were to be carried out simultaneously: the breaches were to be opened within approximately 5 to 7 hours, with the bridges built about two hours later, all under enemy fire and artillery.
The engineering units assigned to these missions numbered about 35 battalions across various specialisms. It is worth noting that the Corps of Engineers was the surprise and the main blow to the enemy in the overall battle strategy.
