Carbon Footprint and ISO Standards

6 min read

Environmental sustainability is a vital issue of growing importance worldwide, as climate change is having a negative effect on the planet as a whole. The carbon footprint is an important measure for understanding the impact of human activity on the environment, reflecting the total quantity of greenhouse gases (such as carbon dioxide) released as a result of human practices. At the same time, ISO certifications are an effective tool for improving organisations’ environmental performance and play a key role in achieving sustainability goals through internationally recognised standards.

This article looks at the carbon footprint and ISO certifications, particularly ISO 14001 (environmental management systems), and at how certifications such as ISO 50001 (energy management systems) and ISO 14067 (carbon footprint of products) can be combined to achieve more advanced and sustainable environmental goals.

The Carbon Footprint: What It Is and Why It Matters

The carbon footprint is an environmental measure of the carbon dioxide emissions produced by various human activities, such as energy use in homes and commercial premises, transport (cars and aircraft), the production of materials and the manufacture of goods. These emissions are measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) per unit of activity, product or service.

Measuring the carbon footprint is becoming increasingly important today, as rising carbon emissions contribute to climate change and global warming, leading to many environmental problems such as rising temperatures, melting polar ice and rising sea levels. Measuring and reducing the carbon footprint is therefore vital to global efforts to tackle climate change.

ISO and Its Role in Improving Environmental Performance

ISO is an international standard-setting body that aims to improve quality and efficiency in many fields, including the environment. In this context, ISO 14001 is the most widely used standard; it covers environmental management systems and sets out the core requirements companies must follow to improve their environmental performance.

ISO 14001: Environmental Management Systems

ISO 14001 is the international standard for environmental management systems. It helps companies and organisations identify the environmental impacts of their activities and plan improvements to their environmental performance. Its main aim is to strike a balance between economic interests and environmental impact, helping to reduce pollution, use resources more efficiently and achieve sustainability.

ISO 14001 covers several key areas, including:

  • Identifying environmental impacts: companies must identify the activities that may cause pollution or deplete natural resources.
  • Setting environmental objectives: setting practical targets to improve environmental performance, such as cutting carbon emissions and reducing water and energy consumption.
  • Monitoring environmental activities: tracking progress towards environmental objectives through measurement tools and environmental reporting.

The Link Between the Carbon Footprint and ISO 14001

ISO 14001 is closely linked to the concept of the carbon footprint, as measuring and analysing the carbon footprint forms part of a company’s environmental management requirements. Here are some of the ways the two fit together:

1. Reducing the Carbon Footprint Through Environmental Management Systems

ISO 14001 aims to reduce the environmental impact of industrial operations, including reducing the carbon footprint by using energy and resources more efficiently. Activities within this framework include:

  • Using renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.
  • Improving energy efficiency through modern energy-saving technologies, such as smart lighting and efficient heating and cooling systems.
  • Promoting sustainable transport by using public transport or switching to electric vehicles.

2. Measuring and Analysing the Carbon Footprint

Through ISO 14001, companies accurately identify and analyse their carbon footprint, allowing them to see how much their activities actually contribute to carbon emissions. This data helps organisations develop targeted strategies to cut emissions, such as:

  • Identifying the processes that contribute to higher emissions.
  • Applying continual improvement techniques aimed at reducing those emissions.

3. Alignment with Global Environmental Policies

Through ISO 14001, companies commit to best environmental practice, helping them align with global environmental policies such as the Paris Agreement on climate change, which aims to limit global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels.

ISO 50001: Energy Management Systems

In addition to ISO 14001, companies can obtain ISO 50001 for energy management, which helps them use energy more efficiently. This standard focuses on:

  • Analysing energy consumption within the organisation.
  • Optimising energy use through strategies such as upgrading equipment and infrastructure and switching to renewable energy.
  • Reducing energy-related costs, which can also help shrink the carbon footprint by reducing reliance on conventional energy sources.

ISO 14067: Carbon Footprint of Products

ISO 14067 can also be added to analyse the carbon footprint at the level of individual products. This standard aims to:

  • Measure a product’s environmental impact across its life cycle.
  • Reduce the emissions associated with manufacturing, transporting, distributing and using the product.

ISO 14067 complements ISO 14001: companies using both standards can improve production in ways that lower the carbon footprint of their products.

Combining ISO 14001, ISO 50001 and ISO 14067 helps companies achieve comprehensive environmental improvements, including:

  • Environmental sustainability through less pollution and lower resource consumption.
  • Greater energy efficiency and less waste.
  • Lower energy costs, bringing financial benefits to the organisation.
  • A better reputation as an environmentally responsible organisation, strengthening its competitiveness in the market.

This integration also strengthens organisations’ ability to meet sustainable development goals and ensures their compliance with international standards for the environment and energy.

By integrating ISO 50001 and ISO 14067 with ISO 14001, companies can reach high levels of environmental sustainability and reduce their impact on the environment. This integration helps organisations use energy and resources more efficiently and cut carbon emissions, strengthening transparency and environmental responsibility over the long term.
