ISO 28000 Certification: Security Risk Management for Supply Chains

5 min read

In today’s business world, supply chains are becoming ever more complex and interconnected, multiplying the potential security risks. This has created a need for international standards that keep these chains safe and well organised, and ISO 28000 certification emerged as the globally recognised supply chain security management system.

What Is ISO 28000 Certification?

ISO 28000 certification provides a unified framework that helps organisations assess, identify and mitigate the security risks facing their supply chains. It offers a systematic approach to keeping logistics operations safe, protecting assets, limiting harmful activity and building trust between all parties in the supply chain.

Benefits of ISO 28000 Certification

ISO 28000 certification offers organisations many benefits, including:

      • Improved security: the certification helps you apply best practice in supply chain security management, reducing the risk of fraud, theft, piracy, cyber attacks and other threats.

      • More efficient operations: the certification helps streamline processes and reduce logistics errors, improving supply chain efficiency and lowering costs.

      • Greater customer satisfaction: a secure supply chain leads to better product quality and faster delivery, increasing customer satisfaction and loyalty.

      • Competitive advantage: ISO 28000 certification shows the organisation’s commitment to the highest security standards, enhancing its image and giving it a competitive edge in the market.

      • Legal and regulatory compliance: the certification helps ensure the organisation complies with laws and regulations on supply chain security.

How to Obtain ISO 28000 Certification

To obtain ISO 28000 certification, organisations need to follow specific steps, including:

        1. Assess the current situation: evaluate the security risks facing the existing supply chain.

        1. Develop a supply chain security management system: design a tailored system that meets the requirements of ISO 28000.

        1. Implement the supply chain security management system: put the system into practice and train staff to use it.

        1. Review and audit the system: review the system regularly and make any necessary changes.

        1. Obtain the certificate: apply for ISO 28000 certification from an accredited body.

The History of ISO 28000 Covers Two Main Stages

      1. The first edition:

          • The first edition of ISO 28000 was published in 2007 under the title “Specification for security management systems for the supply chain”. It aimed to provide a comprehensive framework for managing security risks in supply chains.

        2. Revision and update:

            • In 2015, responsibility for ISO 28000 was transferred to technical committee ISO/TC 292, “Security and resilience”.

            • Later, in 2019, the committee decided to begin a full revision of the standard.

            • The justification study for the revision was accepted by the Technical Management Board (TMB) of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

            • On 15 March 2022, the revised second edition of ISO 28000 was published, with important updates to make it more effective and bring it into line with current best practice in supply chain security management.

            • 2007: the first edition of ISO 28000 was published.

            • 2015: responsibility for the standard was transferred to ISO/TC 292.

            • 2019: a full revision of the standard began.

            • 2022: the revised second edition of ISO 28000 was published.
