The oil and gas sector is one of the most important economic sectors in the world and is closely linked to the safety of human life and protection of the environment. Given the potential risks associated with the sector’s activities, international standards were needed to ensure the quality of the products and services it provides. One of the most important is ISO 29001, which sets out quality management system requirements for the oil and gas sector.
What is ISO 29001 certification?
It is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that sets out the quality management system requirements for the oil and gas sector. It complements the ISO 9001 quality management system standard and adds requirements that address the sector’s specific needs, such as:
- A focus on risk prevention and improved safety.
- Strict process control to ensure product quality.
- Waste reduction and environmental protection.
- Effective communication between all stakeholders.
What are the benefits of ISO 29001 certification?
ISO 29001 certification offers many benefits to organisations in the oil and gas sector, including:
- Better quality products and services: by applying the quality requirements set out in the certification, organisations can consistently assure the quality of their products and services.
- More efficient operations: the certification helps improve operational efficiency and reduce costs by adopting best management practices.
- Greater safety: the certification focuses on risk prevention and improved safety, reducing workplace accidents and protecting employees.
- Environmental protection: the certification helps reduce waste and protect the environment through sustainable practices.
- A better corporate image: the certification enhances the organisation’s image and presents it as a trustworthy organisation committed to the highest quality and safety standards.
- Competitive advantage: the certification helps set the organisation apart from its competitors and gain a competitive edge in the market.

Requirements for ISO 29001 certification
To achieve ISO 29001 certification, organisations in the oil and gas sector must follow these steps:
1. Define the scope of the system:
- Identify the activities and processes covered by the quality management system.
2. Implement the ISO 29001 requirements:
- Implement the certification requirements, including:
- Leadership and commitment: top management’s commitment to the quality management system.

3. Internal audit:
- Carry out an internal audit to confirm the system meets the certification requirements.
4. External audit:
- Engage an accredited body to carry out an external audit of the system.
A brief history of ISO 29001
ISO 29001 emerged in response to the growing need for international standards to assure the quality of products and services in the oil and gas sector.
In 2003, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published the international specification TS 29001 as the quality management system for the oil and gas sector.
Later, the requirements of TS 29001 were combined with those of ISO 9001 in the 2010 edition of ISO 29001.
In 2020, it was revised again as ISO 29001:2020, the current edition.
This edition focuses on assuring the quality of products and services in the oil and gas sector, enhancing safety and protecting the environment.
Who can obtain ISO 29001 certification?
Any organisation operating in the oil and gas sector can obtain ISO 29001 certification, provided it meets the certification requirements and implements its quality management system effectively.
Types of organisations that can obtain the certification include:
- Oil and gas companies: including exploration, production, refining and distribution companies.
- Contractors: including companies providing design, construction, installation and maintenance services for oil and gas facilities.
- Oil and gas equipment manufacturers: including companies that manufacture equipment and components used in the oil and gas industry.
- Service providers: including companies providing services such as inspection, testing, training and consultancy in the oil and gas sector.
