The Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC) is Egypt’s sole national accreditation body for conformity assessment bodies, including the various types of conformity testing.
The council was established by Presidential Decree No. 312 of 1996 and reorganised by a further Presidential Decree, No. 248 of 2006, making it the only national body for assessing and accrediting conformity assessment bodies in Egypt. This makes it the body responsible for the quality of standards and for strengthening confidence in Egyptian products and services.
Establishment of the Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC)
The Egyptian Accreditation Council was established by Presidential Decree No. 312 of 1996 and updated by Decree No. 248 of 2006, which granted it technical, administrative and financial independence. EGAC is the only national institution responsible for assessing and accrediting the various conformity assessment bodies, including testing laboratories, calibration laboratories, inspection bodies, management system certification bodies, medical laboratories, product certification bodies and proficiency testing providers.
EGAC operates as a non-profit government body affiliated to the Ministry of Trade and Industry, overseen by a 14-member board of directors representing the various stakeholders and relevant bodies.
Objectives of the Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC)
EGAC pursues a number of objectives that raise the quality of standards and promote compliance with international standards, including:
- Providing accreditation services in line with international requirements, strengthening Egypt’s standing as a quality-driven destination.
- Helping to improve testing, inspection and calibration standards in line with the requirements of international standards.
- Providing assessment services in support of government regulations and initiatives, helping to improve quality and reliability.
- Establishing mutual recognition with international and regional accreditation bodies to promote the exchange of expertise and standards, reduce the need for multiple assessments and facilitate exports and imports.
Responsibilities of the Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC)
EGAC has a number of responsibilities, including:
- Establishing a system for assessing conformity assessment bodies and issuing accreditation certificates.
- Granting, renewing or amending accreditation for applicant bodies.
- Continuously monitoring accredited bodies to ensure that they comply with quality standards.
- Supporting higher standards in the services of conformity assessment bodies in line with international standards, and encouraging the exchange of expertise between different accreditation bodies.
- Representing Egypt internationally in accreditation activities and cooperating with counterpart bodies.
EGAC’s aim
EGAC aims to achieve mutual recognition with international accreditation bodies, enhancing Egypt’s reputation and supporting the national economy. The council works towards this aim by adopting international standards and applying them across the processes and criteria used by conformity assessment bodies.
The Egyptian Accreditation Council’s policy
EGAC follows a clear policy focused on impartiality, confidentiality and integrity in all its activities, so that it achieves its objectives in line with its quality manual. This policy ensures consistent quality in the accreditation granted and increases the transparency of the processes and criteria EGAC adopts, helping to build confidence in local and international markets.
Accreditation services provided by EGAC
EGAC provides accreditation services in accordance with well-established, internationally recognised principles of quality assurance, in line with international requirements and recommendations for operating accreditation systems. EGAC accredits the various conformity assessment bodies so that they meet the requirements of international standards, making EGAC a trusted and recognised reference in Egypt and across the region.
EGAC is a cornerstone in developing and strengthening Egyptian standards, acting as a bridge between Egypt and the world in accreditation and quality. It raises the standing of Egyptian products and services worldwide and ensures sustained compliance with the highest quality standards.
