ISO 21001: What Is It and How Do Educational Organisations Benefit?

4 min read

ISO 21001 is the most effective and influential quality standard for educational organisations that provide educational and academic products and services. The standard improves an organisation’s ability to meet the requirements of learners, customers and staff, with the aim of increasing their satisfaction. The system focuses on the interaction between educational organisations and their learners, creating a sound practical and academic environment and a safe climate for teaching and learning within the organisation.

How Do Educational Organisations Benefit from ISO 21001?

  • ISO 21001 helps organise educational institutions and improve the environment for everyone involved in the learning process. This is achieved by the organisation applying the standards and practices required to earn certification:
  • Improving the quality of education and the entire learning process through continuous monitoring of educational processes
  • Raising the educational organisation’s competitiveness
  • Increasing learner and customer satisfaction by embedding transparency in the delivery of educational services
  • Strengthening the competitiveness of educational organisations
  • Reducing processes that waste or lose resources
  • Improving the image of educational organisations and increasing their credibility
  • Focusing on the needs and requirements of learners with special needs
  • Increasing the organisation’s credibility
  • Achieving equal opportunities for all learners regardless of their religious background, ethnic or cultural origin, gender or ability/disability

Which Organisations Can Obtain ISO 21001 Certification?

Any educational organisation can obtain ISO 21001 certification, whatever its size, provided it has two or more employees, is a legal entity and is licensed to operate and provide educational services to its customers. The most important include:

  • State and private schools
  • Schools at every stage (primary, preparatory and secondary)
  • State and private colleges
  • State and private universities
  • Educational institutes and vocational education providers
  • Training centres
  • Special education centres
  • Training and education departments

All of these organisations fall within the scope of ISO 21001, which applies to any organisation that needs to demonstrate its ability to keep delivering high-quality educational services and to develop as an educational organisation

The History of ISO 21001

ISO 21001 has had only one edition, published in 2018 and known as ISO 21001:2018

How Can Educational Organisations Obtain ISO 21001?

Educational organisations seeking to comply with the quality requirements of ISO 21001 must meet a number of conditions:

  • The organisation must be officially established, with a commercial register or operating licence
  • The organisation must commit to implementing the requirements of the latest edition of ISO 21001
  • The organisation must have a documented management system
  • The organisation’s team must be trained and qualified to implement the requirements of ISO 21001 professionally and be fully aware of the international conditions for certification
  • The organisation must be able to correct its errors, take action to prevent them recurring and identify the root causes of problems, through an internal audit team
  • The organisation must pass the external audit (on-site audit) without any major nonconformities, after which it is recommended for ISO 21001 certification
  • The organisation must apply for an ISO 21001 certificate of conformity from an accredited, internationally recognised certification body
